1938 gray stallion Alyf 1465 (Ronek 807 x Fath 583) was my favorite saddle horse of my life. Of all the horses I have ridden, I consider that he was the best.
He was sensitive and fearless. He was also exceptionally well trained in the old traditional way (which few today seem to know or understand). He had a very rapid walk, an absolutely brilliant natural trot, and he was also a natural ambler. In riding, he would either trot or amble - and could be pushed into a very fast natural pace - as I asked. He was extremely easy riding. We seemed to go out on rides together communicating mostly by some kind of ESP. Until I started riding him when he was 16 years old (I rode him for four years, until he was 20), he had never been allowed to amble or pace, even though it was so natural for him. When I started letting him amble when we were out, he would swing into that gait that was so natural to him, and he could go on and on without effort, mile and after mile. It was also extremely easy on his rider. He liked doing it. Once, when riding with another rider mounted on Farlowa, Alyf, doing his full pace, easily kept upside by side with Farlowa who was doing a good hand gallop. When riding him, he was interested in everything, and almost always had his lovely ears up. Yet, he never, ever shied or showed fear of anything. When I got married, Gladys Brown Edwards said her wedding gift to me would be one of her beautiful pastels. She asked me who I wanted. I chose Alyf and for all these years my beloved Alyf has looked at me from his life-like portrait on my wall. --Carol Mulder
