His hoof grew back slightly deformed and, to protect the foot, developed an odd gait at the walk and trot. Observers said that it looked like he was going to fall over until he reached full flight. Always a little on the clever side, Assault learned that if he took a sudden left turn when his rider wasn`t paying attention, he could leave the boy hanging in midair and let himself explore the barn area at full gallop. He repeated the behavior on a regular basis, giving his trainer more than his fair share of grey hairs. Assault proved to be sterile at stud, so he returned to the track 4 times before he was eventually retired offically in 1950. He was allowed to pasture breed with quarter horse mares and it was reported that some of them did produce foals.
