BINT ROGA AL ZARKA M, ARABIAN, 1895c
| Color: gr
A Saqlawiyah Jidraniyah. Other spellings may be Bint Roda or Bint Roja
NOTES: The above information (except for the date, which is an Al Khamsa estimate) is shown for the dam of Om Dalal in the 1932 certified pedigree for *Bint Saada from the Royal Agricultural Society. This pedigree shows the sire as Dahman El Azrak (APK).
The RAS History pedigree on p12a shows Bint Roga Al Zarka as /Lady Anne Blunt`s Breed/. Archer, et al., [1978, 284] point out that there is no /Bint Roga Al Zarka/ in the Blunt`s Sheykh Obeyd herd book, and it is suggested that Bint Roga Al Zarka was actually /Bint Roda/.
Bint Roda was purchased by Lady Anne from a son of Prince Ahmed Pasha Kemal and is shown in the Sheykh Obeyd herd book [Pearson, 1988, 142-3] as an 1895 grey mare by Jamil El Ahmar (APK) out of /Roga/ (APS), a grey Saqlawiyah-Jidraniyah of the strains of Abbas Pasha, bred by Prince Ahmed and purchased by Lady Anne for Sheykh Obeyd in 1909.
On p63, the RAS History shows the strain as Saqlawi Jidran of Ibn Sudan, which adds the Sudaniyah family designation. Lady Anne Blunt`s comments about the family make it clear that she was not aware of a family or tail female designation for the line beyond the strain of Saqlawi Jidran.
Recent mtDNA research [Bowling, unpublished, 1999] shows that the line tracing to Roga El Beda in tail-female is different from that tracing to Ghazieh, the usual Sudaniyah line from the Abbas Pasha stud.
The equating of Bint Roga Al Zarka with Lady Anne`s Bint Roda is supported in Lady Anne`s journal entries. On visiting Prince Ahmad`s stud, Lady Anne notes a grey 13-year-old Saqlawiyah Jidraniyah mare by /Jamil/ (in context, Jamil El Ahmar) and out of Roga, a mare from the stud of Ali Pasha Sharif [J&C, 3.10.1907].
Later, on visiting Prince Mohamed Aly`s stud, she notes a chestnut mare (in context, Om Dalal) as a daughter of the fleabitten Bint Roga [J&C, 12.17.1907]. Shortly thereafter, Lady Anne buys /Roda/, a 1906 bay daughter of /Bint Roda/ by Sabbah (APK) [J&C, 1.9.1908], and a few months later buys the dam /Bint Roda/, both from Prince Ahmad`s son, Prince Yusef [J&C, 4.25.1909].
Bint Roda is described as a c1895 fleabitten mare. On 12.22.1908, she describes Om Dalal (APK) as a sister to her own bay filly, Roda, and on 1.25.1911 says, /(Om Dalal) the chestnut Segl. Jed. daughter of my old B.Roda, and her daughter, the now nearly white 5 year old Dalal/ (Dalal Al Zarka). The emphasis is Lady Anne`s.
Taken together, these journal entries tie Om Dalal (APK) and her descendants to Lady Anne Blunt`s Bint Roda/Bint Roga. The /d/ in Roda, the /j/ in Roja and the /g/ in Roga seem to have been pronounced enough alike for the name to be spelled several ways.
Raswan Index entry #1487 for Bint Roga Al Zarka shows the same information as the RAS History, including showing Lady Anne Blunt as breeder. Entry #1486 shows /Bint Roda/ as by Jamil El Kebir (APK)-sire of Jamil El Ahmar-and out of Roda, a grey Saqlawiyah-Jidraniyah (Subayni) in the stud of Ali Pasha Sharif.
Entry #8535 shows a birthdate for /Bint Roda/ of 1895. [See also the entry for Roga El Beda (APS)]
E.A.O. Volume 1 gives sire of Bint Roda as Dahman Grey. Sheykh Obeyd Stud Book and Lady Blunt gives sire as Jamil El Ahmar, according to The Arabian Horse Families of Egypt by Colin Pearson with Kees Mol, page xxx. Note on that page states she was given away in 1912.
