PIEGON FEVER IN COLORADO
Hi folks, I wanted to let you all know that we have an outbreak of piegon fever here in Colorado. KDVR TV has posted on their web site a warning from Colorado State University Vet school. The short version is this: Horse owners need to watch for signs of piegon fever which has been spreading in Colorado. C.S.U. Vet school is seeing more cases. Horses will show signs of weight loss, fever, and sometimes lameness. It can also cause sores and abscesses. Piegon fever can be fatal if not treated. Vets say the disease is spread through bacteria in the soil. Humans do not catch piegon fever which is also called piegon breast or dryland distemper. My T/B X warmblood Monty had this last week and has recovered completely. He was running a fever and came up lame. We have 2 other cases at the barn. 1 horse had a fever and stocked up, the other has abscesses but no other signs.

Hey Steve,
thanks for the info. I hadn't heard. I must admit that with the economy and lack of $$$ I haven't vaccinated all my horses this year. Just my show horses are UTD.
Can you post the url?
We are in Penrose, CO (1/2 hr south of ColoSpr).

Clip
This problem seems to have passed with the coming of cold weather. The disease causing microbes live in the soil/muck/mud during warm weather. With any luck this cold spell that we just went through has knocked them back until spring.
