At 3: 2nd Derby S. Sent to France at age 9, where he became an important sire. Gladiator was a 3/4 brother to COTILLON (b f 1831 PARTISAN--QUADRILLE) who was a winner of the Champagne Stakes 1408m=7f at Doncaster, England. Cotillon was the foundation for the vibrant 22-a family. A full sister to Cotillon, CONSTANCE (b f 1835) was dam of CATHERINE HAYES (br f LANERCOST) who won the Oaks Stakes 2414m=12f
Gladiator was sold as a yearling, first to John and William Scott for £100, then to Lord Wilton for £200 plus half of the Derby and St.Leger stakes money should he have won either. Standing 15.3 hands he was admired for his shape and vigour. He was said to possess a strong frame with much scope and good feet. He was described as the ideal of the handsome and powerful racehorse.
