in 1973 and 1974, Loud was sometimes used as a "body double" for champion filly Ruffian by trainer Frank Whiteley. Not wanting the filly to be disturbed by photographers, he would direct the media to Loud's stall. The big gelding was a similar color and had a small white star on his forehead. No reporter ever questioned the practice even though every horse in Whiteley's barn wore a large brass nameplate on its halter. To this day, you can still spot video footage that is supposedly of Ruffian but shows a taller, more massive, coarser animal with a more rounded star: Loud.
