AKA Freemans Messenger. Henry Helm, American Roadsters and Trotting Horses: Ogden's Messenger was bred by Mr. H.N. Cruger, of New Jersey, and was foaled in 1806. He was a grey horse, and was sold when three years old to Judge David A. Ogden. He is described as a 'coarse pattern of a fine horse, with marked traits of his lineage'. This is a description that would apply to all the sons of Messenger. Like all of that family he was a big-jointed, overgrown, and apparently immature young horse. Both ATR-No. WATR 1871, Vol.1, p.141 [Freeman Horse, alias MESSENGER] and p. 232 [MESSENGER, alias Freeman Horse].
