1933-1962. Bred in France, trained in England. Won the Epsom Derby by 3 lengths in 2:33 4/5, bettering the previous Derby record set by Hyperion. Purchased by C. V. Whitney in 1940 and shipped to America. Sire of 70 stakes winners (17%). Known for exceptionally good daughters, including Almahmoud, 2nd dam of Northern Dancer, and Grey Flight, one of the few mares to produce nine stakes winners. When Mahmoud was leaving England for the United States during Word War II, the ships captain refused to take the stallion aboard, saying he didnt have proper papers. So, Mahmoud was put in a shed and the boat left without him - and was torpedoed. Mahmoud came over safely on another vessel. Very influential sire in Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse lines today.
