Marske br c 1750 (Squirt - The Ruby Mare, by Huttons Blacklegs). Sire Line Darley Arabian. Family 8.
Bred by John Hutton, he was named after the village near Richmond, Yorkshire, where he was born. He was traded as a weanling to His Royal Highness the Duke of Cumberland in exchange for a chestnut Arabian. His turf career was unremarkable, although he won three races.
Retired to the Dukes stud at Cranbourne Lodge in Windsor Forest, he was a private stallion until the Dukes death in 1765. He was sold in the dispersal sale at Mr Tattersalls to a Dorsetshire farmer for a small sum, and in 1766 covered there for half a guinea. Then, purchased by Mr Wildman for 20 guineas, he covered at Bistern, near Ringwood, Hampshire, in 1767 and 1768. In 1769 he stood at Gibbons` Grove, near Leatherhead, Surrey, where his fee rose to 30 guineas over the next few years. After his son Eclipse (ch c 1764) established his supremacy, Marske became immensely popular and was purchased by the Earl of Abingdon for 1000 guineas. He stood at his Lordships stud in Rycroft, Oxfordshire, where he commanded a fee of 100 guineas. He sired numbers of excellent racehorses, among them Young Marske (b c 1771) and Shark* (br c 1771).
Marske was Champion Sire in 1775 and 1776. He died at Rycroft in 1779.
Sire of the great Eclipse.
