Scotch Bar Tommy is the second Leading Sire of Performance Horses. Tommy was himself a National Champion in both Halter and Western Pleasure, and is probably best known for producing Western Pleasure horses. Like most of the horses descending from Sonny Dee Bar, he is a sabino, He may carry the frame gene as well, but it is hard to tell with the type of pattern he displays. Scotch Bar Tommy, a 1983 sorrel overo stallion by Scotch Bar Time (AQHA) and out of Comanche Lara, was born at a time when the Western horse show industry was in a state of flux. The age of the all-around halter and performance horse was rapidly drawing to a close, to be replaced by the age of the specialized, one-event horse. As a show horse, “Tommy” was able to parlay his above-average conformation and working ability into an impressive halter and Western pleasure career. As a sire, he was able to transmit his positive attributes into a stud career that saw him rise to the enviable position of APHA’s Number One All-Time Leading Sire of Performance Point Earners (1964–2004). Scotch Bar Tommy was bred by Jim Dudley of Latimer, Iowa. His sire, Scotch Bar Time , was a 1974 sorrel stallion by AQHA Hall of Fame horse Sonny Dee Bar, and out of AQHA Champion Chubby Time. Although still a relatively unaccomplished sire at the time of Scotch Bar Tommy’s birth, Scotch Bar Time went on to sire AQHA earners of 18 championships, 218 Superior awards, 585 Register of Merits (ROMs) and 42,009.5 points. Comanche Lara, Tommy’s dam, was a 1978 sorrel overo by Comanche Mount and out of Triangle Bars (AQHA). Scotch Bar Tommy was her first foal, but she, too, went on to establish herself as a premier producer. Among her 12 foals and nine performers were: Mr Dynasty, APHA Champion, Superior halter and Western pleasure; Lara Dee Bar, performance point earner and founder of her own family of Paint reining horses; and Painted Obvious, four-time Superior halter horse. An own son of Sonny Dee Bar out of a Spot Cash mare. Dam: Comanche Lara was a great foundation bred mare who goes back to Leading Sire, Yellow Mount and Three Bars TB. From a genetic standpoint, Scotch Bar Tommy was pre-programmed to succeed.
