ESPN ranked Secretariat at #35 in their 100 greatest athletes of the last century and was the only non-human on the list. Secretariat was euthanized on Oct. 4, 1989 at the age of 19 due to complications from laminitis. He had the largest heart ever recorded for any racehorse, estimated at 22 lbs and more than double the usual weight.
