He won the Belmont Stakes in 2:24 by 31 lengths setting a World Record that may never be broken. Also his Kentucky Derby record of 1:59:2 still stands. Secretariat won the Horse of the Year title in both 1972 and 1973, and even graced the front cover of Newsweek, and Time magazines. ESPN ranked Secretariat at #35 in their 100 greatest athletes of the last century and was the only non-human on the list. Secretariat was euthanized on Oct. 4, 1989 at the age of 19 due to complications from laminitis. He had the largest heart ever recorded for any racehorse, estimated at 22 lbs and more than double the usual weight. Secretariat was considered by many to be the greatest Thoroughbred Racehorse in the modern era of racing.
