Made famous as John Wayne's mount in the movie El Dorado Bred by Chub Ralston, Spalding, Idaho
Zip Cochise was born in Spalding, Idaho, and raised by Chub Ralstin. Ralstin was an active ApHC member and often rode on the Chief Joseph Trail Ride. The colorful stallion, known as Zip was by a Quarter Horse stallion and out of the first Appaloosa National Champion Mare, BONNIE F434. Zip starred as John Wayne's mount in the 1967 film, El Dorado. Because of the popularity of the film, the stallion became an icon for the wild west. Throughout the film, the Duke referred to the horse by its name "Cochise" which was somewhat unusual for his films as he rarely mentioned his horses' real names.
🎥Zip not only excelled on the silver screen but also was successful in the cutting pen.
🐎 In 2008, Breyer made a limited-edition model of the stallion. reference: The Appaloosa Horse Club
