16 hands 2 inches at the withers, 16-3 at the rump. Eclipse was bad tempered and difficult to train. Made his racing debut at age 5. Racing at 5 and 6 years of age, he won all of his 26 races. His stride was computed at 25 feet and could repeat strides 2-1/3 times each second, thereby running a mile in 1:55. Upon necropsy, his heart weighed 14 pounds, almost twice the size of the average thoroughbred of his day. Foundation of the Thoroughbred and also contributed to quarter horse race horses. Over 23 years his sons and daughters won an estimated 344 races worth 520,000 pounds.
