Dr. Blum stood his last season at Sugar Maple in 1997 but had remained there as a pensioner. He was euthanized in early October because of a throat tumor, and the Kaskels buried the 27-year-old son of Dr. Fager on their farm.

He sired 19 stakes winners in 17 crops, including Grade 2 winner Richard R., Grade 3 winner Medicine Woman, and Mexican champion sprinter Someday Jack (Mex). Bred in Virginia by the Christopher Chenery Estate, Dr. Blum was out of the winning Sir Gaylord mare Due Dilly, who produced seven foals, all of which won including multiple graded stakes winner Ring of Light, stakes winner and sire U. S. Flag, and stakes winner Spirit Level.
