Bay, star & strip, snip. Foaled 1886, Independence, IA. Painted by George Ford Morris. Axtell was a son of William L. out of the non-Standard mare Lou. Trained by his breeder he lowered the 2YO stallion record to 2:23 & won every race in which he started. As a 3YO he again won every start & lowered the worlds stallion record to 2:12.In 1889 Williams made history by selling him to a syndicate for $105,000, the highest price ever paid for a horse of any kind at that time. He broke down as a 4YO & never raced again, but retired to stud. Sold Nov 1900 at Old Glory sale age 14 $14,700. His progeny included the foundation sire Axworthy 2:15½, & he became one of the highest priced sires of his day. His 1891 stud fee was $1,000. He died on August 19, 1906 in Terre Haute, IN.
