AKA: OLD PACING ST.CLAIR, ST.CLAIR (pacer) or SAINT CLAIR; Very dark brown/Dapple black, 15.2, 1015 lbs., lh coronet white, very strong & well-muscled, compactly built, wideset eyes, deep chest, long heavy mane & tail, as good legs & feet as ever were on a horse, high, thickset, a fast pacer. Foaled 1844, St. Clair, Michigan. Nothing is really known about his origin. He was taken across the Plains to California in 1849 and was owned in Sacramento till his death. Worked as a dray horse, later as a leader in a stage team. Foundered and put to stud by Mr. John Miller. He paced in about 2:35, and the day before his death showed half a mile in 1:10; Died August 1864, Sacramento, in stable fire.
