2nd 2,000 Guineas 1949. Won: Champagne Stakes (ENG), Chesham Stakes (ENG), Middle Park Stakes (ENG), National Breeders Produce Stakes (ENG), July Cup Stakes (ENG) (twice), King George Stakes (ENG) (twice), Kings Stand Stakes (ENG), Nunthorpe Sweepstakes (ENG)http://www.lacaballada.com/ The grey ABERNANT was Englands fastest horse in the post-World War II years, a brilliant sprinter and winner of 14 of his 17 races. He was the most docile of colts, blessed with a beautiful temperament. In addition to his speedy flat-racing offspring, he sired the great show jumper ABERLI, first a member of the Italian Equestrian Team, and later Kathy Kusners partner for USET, winning in 1967 both the Ladies European Championship in Fontainebleu, and the Puissance at Aachen. Abernant also got ABGAR, a very modest steeplechaser who was purchased to Holland, where he became the powerhouse sire of show jumpers and extremely influential in Dutch warmblood breeding. His KWPN sons included top show jumper and sire OMMEN; VOLKMAR, a leading sire of FEI dressage horses; PION, an international show jumper and sire of six approved KWPN sons and of the show jumper BOOMERANG. Abgar daughters produced such horses as top jumper V.I.P. and the international dressage and show jumping sire ZEOLIET. Yet another son of Abernant was Aberconway, who sired New Zealand-bred ABERLOU, one of the most successful sires of event horses in the world, whose offspring include the world champion and Olympic medalist MESSIAH, the top three-day mare DELTA (second at Badminton and Burghley), and many other eventers and show jumpers. Abernants sire, OWEN TUDOR, was also influential in sport horse pedigrees -- the famous Dutch jumping stallion LUCKY BOY and the influential dressage sire LAURIES CRUSADER both descend from Owen Tudor.
