Gay Forbes was bred in Ohio She was a consistent campaigner for several seasons over the half-mile ovals and took her mark of 2:07ľ as a five-year-old at the North Randall mile track. Dam of the immortal Billy Direct, he being foaled in 1934 when she was eighteen years old. Her owner Mr Ridge and trainer, Mr Pottle decided to bred her in Tenn, and a few days later the stable foreman, Bernard Small, penned off one end of a box car and put in plenty of straw, a bale of good hay, a barrel of water and led in Gay Forbes with a tag on her halter, stating her name and destination. Then began the journey that has changed the pages of harness horse history many times.
