42-18-6-7, $675,470. won 15 stakes 1946 Horse of the Year & Champion 3yo colt 1964 inducted into the Hall of Fame Only Texas-bred Triple Crown winner foaled March 26, 1943 Nicknamed the Club-footed Comet during his racing days because of damage he did stepping on a surveyors stake as a yearling. His hoof grew back slightly deformed and, to protect the foot, developed an odd gait at the walk and trot. Observers said that it looked like he was going to fall over until he reached full flight. Always a little on the clever side, Assault learned that if he took a sudden left turn when his rider wasn`t paying attention, he could leave the boy hanging in midair and let himself explore the barn area at full gallop. He repeated the behavior on a regular basis, giving his trainer more than his fair share of grey hairs. Assault proved to be sterile at stud, so he returned to the track 4 times before he was eventually retired offically in 1951. While living out the rest of his life at King Ranch, Assault pasture-bred a few Quarter Horse mares who did conceive. Two AQHA fillies were registered. died September 1, 1971 after breaking a foreleg, buried at the Ranch.
