I'm pretty sure that Duke and his son the great Dart were both winners at major expositions in the early 20th century such as the ones in St. Louis and San Francisco. A glance at their photographs makes it clear why. If you carefully look at the list of Dude's progeny, a couple of things become obvious, which all Morgan history buffs but me probably already knew. Specifically that C.C. Stillman, one of the guys who saved the Morgan breed in a variety of ways, acquired Duke in about 1914 and shipped him from the Midwest to his estate in Cornwall, NY about 60 miles north of New York City. On Duke' progeny list, you'll note that there are 7 offspring listed as foaled in New York. If you check their progeny, you'll notice there are zero. A Dude son named Dumbell was out of Bell Marea, the dam of the great Select. A couple of daughters were given names starting with 'Dud..." On the available evidence, I'm guessing crosses between the great Duke and Stillman's well-bred Eastern Morgans just didn't work---or something else was going on. (*Note: incomplete progeny list. R.
