Foaled 1882 in NZ, the first NZ-born foal of Onyx (by Angler-Chrysolite by Stockwell) who had previously left the good broodmare Sardonyx while at stud in Australia. At the end of his race career he was purchased by the New Zealand Stud Co. to replace his deceased sire Musket. He was an immediate success as a stallion and was rated an outstanding sire. He left the NZ Derby winner Medallion (later a good sire) in his first crop. Unfortunately just as he was reaching his peak at age 8 he was sold to Australia for the large sum of 5,600 guineas following the breakup of the New Zealand Stud Co. Sired 28 sw with 58 stakeswins.
