At 3 Alsab won the Preakness, Withers, American Derby, Lawrence Realization, and the New York Handicap. Alsab was named Champion Colt in 1941 and 1942. On Sept. 19, 1942, Alsab, age 3, defeated the legendary Triple Crown winner Whirlaway, age 4, in a match race at Narragansett Park in Pawtucket, RI. Alsab's unusual name came from combining the initial syllables of his owners first and last names (Albert Sabath). Purchased as a yearling for $700 at Saratoga yearling sale.
