Strong, short-legged, compact, handsome horse.
Foaled 1827-8, the property of Daniel Jeffreys, Germantown, PA. After foaling into a brickyard, he fell into a clay pit and was more dead than alive. Owner wanted him destoryed, and offered a dollar to anyone who would destroy the horse. His wife soon stopped him, and nursed the horse back to health. Died in 1843 in Knightstown, PA.
He was claimed to be the best trotting stallion of his day. Founder of the Clay line of standardbreds.(Dr Conn, The Arabian Horse in America, gives dam as Whynot mare by Whynot by Messenger.) Pedigree in Wallaces American Stud-Book [1867], vI, p932.
