Gloria McRae began her breeding program in the mid 1960's. Her first Appaloosa was a young stallion named Black Pepper's Genesee Chief. He was Black Roan with a blanket and black spots. His father was a son of Toby II. Chief was 18 months old when he joined Gloria. When Chief was 3 years old she started working with him and realized that he was different compared to other horses. Chief was of excellent character, carried his head high and moved with ease and suppleness. He was very different from the horses she had known before. Gloria was then in her 20s and worked with different horses, often riding more than 10 horses a day. Many of these horses were heavy in the hand, with little elasticity and momentum. But Chief was very balanced, relaxed and self-sustaining.
