He was first owned by Henry Compton of Hampshire, a member of the Jockey Club and a "gentleman-jockey" who attained success at Newmarket. Purchased by Sir Charles Sedley, owner of Trentham and other good racehorses, and an influential Jockey Club member. The horse became known as the Sedley Gray Arabian.
