“Lothar III” was imported from Belgium during the First World War when he was one and a half years old. Curiously, his (red) grey colour put off many potential buyers at the auction, because according to Schürkamp, “for thirty years people had been paying homage to the fashion for chestnuts with a pernicious care” and could not be convinced that “there are good horses in other colours too”. Despite everything, the young stallion found buyers: the purchasing group of Veterinary Councillor F. Lehmke and F. Franken of the Rees-Land-Haffen-Mehr stallion keeping cooperative, which bought the stallion in 1918 for 55,000 marks107. He remained there until his early death in 1929. During the period of occupation of the Rhine Province after the war, Lothar III was brought to Holland under the name of Skarron. He later returned from there with such papers and, according to Schürkamp, covered under this name for several years.
