Nowata Star was bred by Ronald S. Mason and was by Oklahoma Star, a son of the Thoroughbred stallion Dennis Reed. Oklahoma Star was a foundation sire of the Quarter Horse breed. Nowata Star was out of Bay Lucy, a daughter of Chief. Although he had a Thoroughbred grandparent, he was considered 100% foundation.

Nowata Star won his only official start at Garfield Downs when he was ten years old. He was owned by Bob Rader and stood in West Manter, Colorado. He sired 356 AQHA registered foals. He sired AQHA Champions and Racing and Performance Register of Merit earners.
