Old Child Mare The General Stud Book gives the pedigree of the Old Child Mare as: "Bred by Mr Child, or Mr Burdett, got by Sir T Gresley's Bay Arabian called Bay Roan, out of Vixen, by The Helmsley Turk, out of The Royal Mare, which was Dodsworth's dam" [GSB 1:6] The Turf Register notes that "The OLD CHILD MARE (grandam of Whimsey) was also bred by Mr Burdet, and got by Sir Thomas Gresley's Arabian, called Bay Roan; out of Sir Walter Burdet's (afterwards Mr Burdet's) Vixen, which was purchased of Mr Coke" [Pick 1:72]. Both sources agree that Sir Thomas Gresley's bay Arabian was called Bay Roan. The third earliest mare in the lineage of Family 32 Dam of Young Child Mare (by Burdett's Arabian) through which the maternal line of the family continues. 4th dam of the fair class racehorses [Brook's] Lady Thigh and Silvertail; and 5th dam of outstanding racehorse [Warren's] Careless (1756 King's Plates Burford, Lichfield, 1757 King's Plates Guildford, Winchester, Salisbury, Canterbury, Lewes, Lincoln, Newmarket, 1758 King's Plate Newmarket).
