Ricky Taylor was bred by Lewis M. Blackwell in Amarillo, Texas. He was by the Thoroughbred stallion Custus Rastus and out of Mame Taylor, by Jack Dempsey 1. He was a half-brother to Hard Twist and a full-brother to Jaguar.
