The Stuntney Estate is currently run by Alastair Morbey, a descendant of founder Cole Ambrose, who "built the largest breeding herd of Shire horses in England", and purchased the original Jacobean-era Old Hall and property. In 1878, he founded Britain's Shire Horse Society and, by the turn of the century, had hundreds of draft horses and Hackney ponies working on the estate. The Stuntney Estate largely phased out its specialized breeding of colorful Hackney roadsters and ponies in the decade or so leading up to WWI in 1914, owing to dwindling sales of carriage horses due to mechanization. Breeding of the Hackney horse eventually shifted from carriage to saddle with various crosses, which helped diversity the gene pool and prevent too much inbreeding.
