Three Pokes was bred by Henry R. Hurd in Oklahoma. He was by the Thoroughbred stallion Three Bars and out of Poco Vantes, by Vandy. His second dam, Beggar’s Pokey, was by the Thoroughbred stallion Beggar Boy. Three Pokes was 7/8ths Thoroughbred.

Three Pokes made ten starts and won one race at Blue Ribbon Downs in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. He earned a Racing Register of Merit and was rated AAA. In 1970, he was Grand Champion or Reserve Champion at thirteen halter shows. He stood at the Western Trails Ranch in Omaha, Nebraska. He sired 127 AQHA registered foals. He also sired Appaloosas and Paints.
