Breeder: Mr. J. G. Hodgson Owner: Duke of Westminster 12-2-1-3, £875 Won: Priory Stakes Acquired by Mr Porter for the Duke in 1893 for £1,000. The aptly named Vampire was notorious for her mean nature: after her arrival at Eaton, she was said to have mauled one of the grooms and knocked the Duke down when he went to see her. The Duke's first thought was to get rid of her, but he changed his mind, even after she killed her first foal, an 1894 colt by Gonsalvo. Barren in 1901 and 1906. Pictured below at Eaton in 1903, with Pipistrello.
