Ran across a classified ad appearing in several 1951 Western Horseman Magazines, that kind of interested me...one never knows what will raise my interest (ha)... actually it was the word \\polo\\...because I\\\'m interested in this sport.
The ad reads, and I quote \\Vero, Quarter type thoroughbred imported from Argentina. Proven sire of race, polo, stock and pleasure. Stud Fee $50.00.
Bob Marshall c/o Fairgrounds, Calistoga, CA\\. Calistoga is in Napa County, CA.
I did a little research just now, checking my ASB\\\'s and found....
*VERO was imported in 1939 by Jerome Fendrick and owned by Charles S. Howard (of SEABISCUIT fame). He was orginally registered in the Australian Stud Book and appears in ASB Vol XIX pg 1187. Howard bred some mares to him, at least one of SEABISCUIT\\\'s daughters....
Two of *VERO\\\'s foals, a 1954 and a 1955, were bred by R.C. Marshall, Ukiah, CA. I feel confident that R.C and Bob Marshall are one in the same person.
*VERO also was registered in the NQHBA...his number is N-12482 and a daughter is listed on ABDB...SUNSHINE SMITH AQHA 24017, a chestnut mare, foaled 1945 and bred by Charles S. Howard, Willits, CA. You will remember Howard lived and worked in San Francisco, then he purchased his ranch in Willits, CA.
For those not familiar with California...Willits and Ukiah are next door to one another and Calistoga is a little further south.
Compliments of PM MEFFERD Pedigree Research, Anderson, CA.
