Only racing as a 3-year-old, he earned $249,760 for owners Caesar Kimmel and Philip Solondz. His lone stakes score came in the 1 1/16-mile Tampa Bay Derby, where he defeated Impeachment and Perfect Cat. He was also third in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) behind High Yield and More Than Ready. Sent to the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) by trainer John Kimmel, Wheelaway finished fifth behind Fusaichi Pegasus. Following his Belmont effort, according to Joe McMahon, a bone chip was removed. Winner of the 2000 Tampa Bay Derby, retired from racing will stand the 2003 season at Joe and Anne McMahon's McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds in upstate New York.
